Discover France presents many of the most famous and quintessentially Gallic aspects of France onto a CD-ROM sure to tantalise both Francophiles and those about to visit France for the first time in equal measure. The opening sequence of images--including imposing views of the Champs Elysées, La Défense, in Paris, a more down-to-earth shot of a typical brasserie and other things typically French--perfectly sets the scene for what is to come.
Divided into several segments, most of which are very well done (Paris is covered in fine detail, as are some of the most interesting cities around the country) the sections which stand out most are those on pilgrimages and the region-by-region guides. The section on pilgrimage sites includes more famous places such as Vézelay, as well as more remote, stunning locations such as Conques, with high-quality images of the churches in question. These sites integrate well into the region-by-region guides, which have mouth-watering rundowns on local gastronomy--a must for all visitors to France--as well as a representative selection of the local scenery.
All of this is placed within the wider cultural and historical context of France, with interesting guides to major historical movements--the revolution, the May 1968 rebellion, and so on--as well as biographies of major French writers and artists.
